unanswered questions

It's been a long time since I've done a post like this.  A long, long, L - O - N - G time, for sure.

So I figured it was probably time to do one again.  You know, keep my paw in.  That sorta thing.

MOUSES!

What kinda post do I mean?

Well...

Well, the kinda post where I answer all of life's unanswered questions.  You know the kind.  The kind like uh...

Um...

Well...

Well, like who let the dogs out, for one.

MOUSES!

Who DID let the dogs out, you ask?

Their PEEPS! of course.

What, did you think dogs were standin' up on their hind legs, openin' doors, and lettin' themselves outside, now?

Pshaw, of all the silly things.

MOUSES!

'Course, it could also have been aliens.

MOUSES!

And speakin' of aliens...

And speakin' of aliens, we all know it was aliens that built all those pyramids, right?

Right.

MOUSES!

And speakin' of pyramids, I sure am glad Peepers stopped buyin' those funny lookin' pyramid-shaped teabags.  They kinda freak me out, on account of their lookin' so weird.

Imagine usin' pyramids for tea.

MOUSES!

And speakin' of tea...

And speakin' of tea, why-oh-why would peeps wanna use MY catnip to make THEMSELVES tea?

That's right: some peep out there has been stealin' my nip.

At least, that's what I'm thinkin' happened to part of my nip bed.  I'm thinkin' someone went and stole a few stems of catnip.  I've been countin' my nip crop daily, you see -  'cause that's what I do - and I'm absolutely positively certain SOMEONE stole three stems of my nip.  I've got three stems missin', for sure.

MOUSES!

So who stole my catnip, you ask?  Who?

That's gotta be THE MOST IMPORTANT unanswered question of all time.  The most important unanswered question in the whole wide world, to be sure.

MOUSES!

Truth is, I'm thinkin' it was Peepers.  I'm THINKIN' she thought she'd try a few leaves in her tea.  I'M THINKIN'...

Well, I'm thinkin' it had to be Peepers, for sure.  'Cause who else would have come into my garden and done such an awful thing?

Yup, had to be Peepers.  Absolutely HAD to be her.  Either her or some neighbourhood kitty who found him or herself in dire need of the nip.

Either that, or...

Well...

Well, it could have been aliens, I guess.  Nipped up aliens, sippin' on nip tea made from MY catnip - on account of their havin' run out of their own stuff in the little pyramidal teabags - while restin' after a hard day's work buildin' stone pyramids, and takin' a break before havin' to let all the dogs out for their nightly walks.

MOUSES!

Hmmm...

Can aliens even get nipped, do you suppose?

Huh.

Just another one of life's unanswered questions, I guess.  Another question for another post.

aliens!

So first she thought it was a ghost.

But Peepers quickly put the ghost idea to rest on account of her not believin' in ghosts, you see.

Well actually...

Well actually, it's not that Peepers doesn't believe in ghosts.  She's just never met one, and until you actually meet a ghost in person - so to speak - it's difficult to definitively say they exist.  But the one thing Peepers DOES know is that no self-respectin' ghost is gonna haunt our little ol' garage, thumpin' on its door like that, makin' the noise that she heard.  No one has ever died in our little ol' garage - I don't think - so no way, no how, are they gonna be in there haunting it.

MOUSES!

And then she thought it was aliens.  Aliens, I tell you.  Aliens!  But nah, Peepers doesn't believe in aliens.

Okay, so Peepers actually does believe in aliens.  She definitely believes there are aliens out there in space.  Well, not necessarily IN space but on other planets out there in the big ol' vastness of space, if you know what I mean.  Peepers just doesn't necessarily believe those aliens wanna visit our Earth.  It's not like Earth is the Riviera of the Milky Way, she says.  She says, aliens aren't likely gonna wanna hang out with the locals here, on account of some of those locals bein' a little loco, if you know what I mean.

Not to mention batty and bonkers, as well as right round the bend.

MOUSES!

So discountin' the hauntin' and alien visitation theories, Peepers gave up on figurin' out what had made that thumpin' noise in the garage.

For a bit.

But bein' the brave soul that she is...

Brave...  Reckless...  Stupid...  WHATEVER.

Bein' the peep that she is, Peepers decided to open the garage door and investigate.  I, on the other paw, ran off and hid.

I mean, judiciously took cover.

MOUSES!

Well lo and behold, once Peepers opened the door, OUT WALKED SAFFRON, lookin' cool as a cucumber, he did.

MOUSES!

So apparently...

So apparently, Saffron had managed to get himself locked in the garage and decided to thump on the door to let Peepers know, allowin' him to escape.  Pretty smart cat, that Saffron is.

Of course, he IS my brother, so what do you expect?

MOUSES!

But later that day...

Later that day, Peepers went out for a walk and while out doin' her walkin', heard an awfully odd noise.  Was it a bird?  Was it a plane?  Was it Supercat?

Actually, no.  It didn't sound like any of those things.  It sounded like an engine of some sort.  But it was a weird kinda engine-like sound.  It was gettin' louder, then softer, then louder again.  Was it a generator?  Nah, power wasn't out.  Was it a pump of some kind?  Nah, too late in the day for peeps to be pumpin' whatever peeps pump.  Was it...

Was it...

WAS IT ALIENS OF SOME KIND?

Well not unless aliens were out there mowin' some guy's lawn.

Yup, that's right.  Nothin' nefarious goin' on in our subdivision last night.  Nothin' nefarious at all.  Just some guy on a rideabout, ridin' in circles, around and around and around.

When Peepers told me about what she had heard, and how she had briefly thought it might have been extraterrestrials, I reminded her that if she believed aliens don't like hangin' out in our neighbourhood, THEY MOST CERTAINLY DON'T wanna be out there mowin' our lawns.

At least not for free.

But on the other paw...

On the other paw, our lawn kinda needs a good mow right about now.

And extraterrestrials settin' up lawn care services could explain that whole crop circle thing.

I wonder if they're listed in the Yellow Pages.

What do you think?

all hail the great peepers

So yesterday I was hangin' about in the garden, followin' the peep around, when...

Scratch that.  Doesn't sound like somethin' I'd do.

So yesterday I was hangin' about in the garden, allowing the peep to THINK I was followin' her around, when really, she was followin' me.

That's better.

MOUSES!

The peep was waterin' some stuff out there, and I was watchin' her with great interest, when...

Scratch that.  Doesn't sound like somethin' I'd do.

The peep was waterin' some stuff out there, and I was SUPERVISING her activities.

That's better.

MOUSES!

Well at some point she and I ended up way at the back of the garden, and she was waterin' these vine things climbing up some kinda metal contraption.  They looked like they were tryin' to take over the place!

You know, like aliens do.

MOUSES!

Well the peep was gettin' awfully close to those possibly alien vines, and I thought to myself, Oh great, next thing I know she's gonna get her brain snatched or somethin' like that.

MOUSES!

Then, after watering the possibly alien vines, she started pokin' around in them, looking under leaves and things like that, making me then think, Yup, here comes the brain snatchin' bit.  You see it on TV all the time and it happens just like that.  Peeps stickin' their noses into places their noses don't belong.

MOUSES!

Well the next thing I knew, out from under one of those vines, the peep pulled...

Pulled...

PULLED...

A CUCUMBER.

MOUSES!

My jaw dropped.  My face paled.  My hind legs got all wobbly and stuff.

Are you crazy?  Are you mad?  Have you gone bonkers?  ARE YOU INSANE?  Peepers, put that Dirty Rotten, Dastardly Dangerous Cucumber DOWN!

Well the peep, bein' a peep, totally ignored my high-pitched screams...

Scratch that.  Doesn't sound like somethin' I'd do.

Well the peep, bein' a peep, totally ignored my MANly MANcat demand.  In fact, instead of heeding my warning, she reached back in and pulled out another...

CUCUMBER.

MOUSES!

I wanted to cry.  I wanted to sob.  I wanted to save my peep from that dastardly, dirty rotten fruit.  I wanted to...

Okay, so I ran.  I admit it.  Are you satisfied?  You can't blame a kitty for that.  I mean, maybe the peep didn't care if the cucumber aliens ate her brains, but I - bein' the extremely intelligent cat that I am - knew the best thing to do at the sight of a cucumber was...

RUN.

MOUSES!

So I ran.  I ran and I ran and I ran.  I ran straight to the house and into the kitchen to warn Rushton and Peep #2, and...

And then the next thing I knew, Ol' Peepers was there in the kitchen, too.  And in her paws...  I mean, hands, were three cukes.

MOUSES!

Well let me tell you, my friends.  What I witnessed next, I can barely believe.  It was a sight no kitty has ever seen.

There was my peep.  MY peep.  Ol' Peepers, for sure.  Well she wrestled those cucumber freaks.  She wrestled 'em right into the sink, drownin' their alieness right out of 'em.  And after half-drowning the things, she ATTACKED 'EM WITH KNIVES!  KNIVES!

Okay, so there was only one knife involved, but when you think about it, that makes what she did even MORE courageous and fearless and...

Dumb?

Maybe.

MOUSES!

Next thing I knew, she was skinning those alien things.  She was slicing and dicing and...

Well...

Well let's just say, a cucumber is not nearly so intimidating to a kitty like me when it's made into little tea sandwiches, as pretty as can be.

MOUSES!

I sighed a huge sigh of relief, knowing MY PEEP had won the GREAT CUCUMBER BATTLE of 2019.  Then I called up the New York Times, as well as the Globe and Mail, knowing they'd surely want first dibs on THE story of the century.

Long story short, they didn't.

I have no idea why.

MOUSES!

ALL HAIL THE GREAT PEEPERS!  Three cucumbers taken down without even breaking a sweat.

And that, my friends, was that.

MOUSES!

Hey everybody!  You all remember a few years back when peeps were scarin' kitties with cucumbers?  Yup, it was crazy as crazy can be.  I did blog about it at the time, and you can read all 'bout it right HERE.  MOUSES!

don't look at me

Don't look at me, Peepers.  I always use the litter box.

And when I say always, I mean, always.  Like in... All the time.  Like... ALWAYS.

Okay, so there was that one time.

But I'm pretty sure we both agreed when it happened, it was total accident, for sure.

Boy oh boy, I'm NEVER gonna live that one down.  MOUSES!

But speakin' of litter boxes, I've never seen you use a box, Peepers.  You sure it wasn't you who did the dirty deed?  Are you sure it wasn't you who went and pooped in amongst the primroses? MOUSES!

Yeah, yeah...  So you say.

But then, you're always sayin' stuff, Peepers.

Truth be told, I never listen to half the things you say.  I never listen to the other half, either. MOUSES!

But back to the poopin' amongst the primroses.  Seriously, it wasn't me.  I, Seville the Cat, did not dig up those baby primrose plants.  I wouldn't dream of doin' such a thing for I, Seville the Cat, am a gentleman cat, for sure.  MOUSES!

You know...  it might have been the neighbours.

WHY NOT?

Oh sure, you think nothin' of blamin' me, your friendly handsome bloggin' marmalade cat with whom you share a computer, but you won't even consider blamin' the neighbours?  MOUSES!

Well let me ask you this, Peepers.  Have you ever seen the neighbours usin' a litter box?  Huh? HUH?  Well have you?  'Cause maybe there's a reason for that.  Maybe it's 'cause they're sneakin' into the garden, late at night, to do their business in amongst the baby primroses and....

Okay, maybe that is a bit far fetched.

Or not.

MOUSES!

Well...  If it's not the neighbours, that brings us back to YOU.

Hey, you were the one not willin' to blame the peeps livin' next door. MOUSES!

I'm thinkin'...  I'm thinkin' it was you, Peepers, who dug up those baby primrose plants, and you're now makin' a big ol' fuss of accusin' me - a cat who has ONLY EVER ONCE not used the litter box...

Okay, so there was that one other time, too.  But that was an accident as well.  MOUSES!

Anyway, like I said, I'm thinkin' it was you, Peepers, who dug up those primrose plants while doin' your business out in the garden.  And NOW you're pointin' a paw at me, in a feeble-minded attempt to take the blame away from you.

Typical peep behaviour, for sure.  MOUSES!

And when one takes into account the fact that you've never been seen usin' the litter boxes...

FYI, I'd just like to take a moment here to point out that we cats would like for you to continue NOT usin' our litter boxes, but nevertheless...

When one takes into account the fact that you've never been seen usin' the litter boxes, it's PERFECTLY REASONABLE to assume that the entity who dug up the primroses while doin' their business was you.  MOUSES!

You're still denyin' it, huh?  MOUSES!

All I know is, it wasn't me.

And you claim it wasn't you.

And if it wasn't the neighbours....

Could it have been...  Aliens?

Nah, it's a well-known fact that aliens carry litter boxes in their spaceships. Believe-you-me, no one wants to be searchin' for a clean rest stop half-way to Pluto.  Know what I mean?

So if it wasn't aliens...

Hmmm...

Sorry Peepers, but it looks like we're back to blamin' you.

And whatever you do, DON'T EVEN THINK 'bout poopin' anywhere near my nip plants.    MOUSES!

the spider and the peep

Sometimes I wonder 'bout my peeps.  MOUSES!

I know, I know...  I've been tellin' you all how I've been wondering 'bout those peeps of mine, since before recorded history, but what can I say?  They keep on givin' me reasons to wonder!  Especially Peep #1.  She's grounds for wonderment, for sure. MOUSES!

So the other night...

Now this was not the night I blogged about on Wednesday, when Peep #1 came out lookin' for me in her nightie, embarrassing me as no peep has ever embarrassed a cat before.  Nor was it the night I mentioned, in that very same blog post, when the peep went out lookin' for Rushton in her nightie.  No, this was another night.  This was after that.  This was Thursday, the day after I blogged 'bout those other two nights.  MOUSES!

So anyway...  I was outside, and it was dark, and I heard the peep callin' me, but decided I wasn't gonna pay any attention to her.  I figured I'd wait until she gave up and went inside, and then show up at the door.  Also, I wasn't sure if she was in her nightie again and I really, really didn't want a repeat performance of that.  At least not so soon.  A cat has a reputation to maintain, you see. MOUSES!

Well I ignored her and I ignored her, and then the next thing I knew, there she was, standin' practically in front of me, with that darned, moused-up flashlight of hers, flashin' the whole neighbourbood.

Yeah, yeah, I know...  Different kind of flashing.  But anyway...

So there she was, shinin' the flashlight around like she was signalling for the mother ship to come home and get her, when all of a sudden...

Now you remember 'bout how Peep #1 got scared by that spider when she was prickin' out the primroses, a little while ago?  Well this was WAY worse that that.

So Peep #1 was flashin' her flashlight about, when all of a sudden, she saw it.  There it was.  There, right before her...

Oh my mouses, even I am havin' difficulty relating the incident.  Yes, my friends, it was THAT scary.

Now that spider the peep saw before, the one in the primroses, was the biggest, baddest spider anyone had ever seen.  As big as my longest claw, even if said claw had been recently trimmed.

Well that's what the peep was sayin' at the time.  She was sayin' it was the biggest, baddest spider, EVER.  But truth be told, she lied, 'cause let me tell you...

Let me tell you, the biggest, baddest spider there ever was, was not the spider in amongst the primroses.  No sirree.  The biggest, baddest spider there ever was, was the spider hangin' there, in the middle of a web, that stretched out between the ladybug hedge and the white lilac tree - which didn't bloom again this year but that is another story for another day - like it had taken over the entire yard.  The spider's web, I mean, and not the lilac tree, although that ol' ladybug hedge is doin' it's best to take over, for sure.

But I digress.  Back to the spider in its web.

There it was.  There was the spider of all spiders.  One of those black and yellow spiders, at least a quarter in size.  Big body.  L-O-N-G legs.  As icky as icky can be.  And it was there, right in front of the peep, just inches from her face.

Did the peep scream?

You'd think she would scream, wouldn't you?  Yup, you'd think that, for sure. I know I was waiting for the scream and I covered my ears and everything but to my surprise, there was no screaming to be heard.  Not because the peep was brave or anything like that.  Peep #1 didn't scream because she was PETRIFIED.  She just stood there, motionless, without movin' a muscle.

Okay, even I have to admit that was a bit redundant.

But my point is, the peep was peepless.  She was frozen like a block of ice.

Now had she had a block of ice, she could have thrown it at that there spider, but as she had nothin' to throw but her stupid little flashlight, she regained her senses a tad, 'bout a minute later, and slowly backed away.

Having witnessed the event, I took pity upon my peep.  Also, I noticed she was properly clad and not runnin' around the neighbourhood in nothin' but a nightie - THIS TIME - so I figured it was safe to come out, and scampered over to her, being very careful as to avoid that ol' spider's web.

Well the peep was a little shaky.  So shaky she didn't even try to pick me up and believe you me, I was grateful for that.  No need for any extra embarrassing situations.

'Bout an hour later, inside the house, the peep came to her senses completely.  Or at least as best as can be expected.  Unfortunately...

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of mentioning how had the peep walked just a few steps further down the path, she would have had that ol' spider, RIGHT IN HER FACE.

Well you'd have to be there to believe it, my friends.  The words that came out of the peep's mouth. Never knew the peep had 'em in her.  MOUSES!

Apparently, according to the peep, it was all MY fault, for being outside after dark.  After listening to her little hissy fit, I pointed out how VERY FORTUNATE it was that she had been standing still, flashing the neighbourhood with her flashlight, STRAIGHT AHEAD, and not shining it on the ground. I told her how had she been shining the flashlight on the ground, and not into the garden, looking for me, she would have kept on walking and walked right into the web, and gotten that ol' spider, RIGHT IN HER FACE.

Well that did it.

Off on a tirade again, the likes of which I have never before heard.  I wouldn't have been out there in the first place, had I not been looking for you.  I wouldn't have had to look for you, had you come inside when it first started to get dark.  I wouldn't even have been walking down that path, had you come when I first called.

You know, that sort of thing.

So once again I said, "But really, Peepers, aren't you the least bit grateful you were standing still, calling and looking for me, shining the flashlight straight ahead and into the spider's web?  So that you saw the spider?  Knew it was there?  Knew to avoid it?   I mean, you could have had that ol' spider, RIGHT THERE IN YOUR FACE."

Now I wasn't expectin' prezzies or anything - although prezzies would have been gladly accepted - but I think a sincere thank you would have been in order.  But did I get one?  Nope.  Nothin'. Nadda.  It was nadda-wadda-nincompoop, on the thank you front, for sure.  MOUSES!

Well Friday morning, although I wasn't actually speaking to Peep #1 as she had been so rude to me the night before, I nevertheless went outside with her, lookin' for the spider, in the light of day.

Now here's where things get sticky...

No, not in a sticky spider web kind of way, although I would imagine a spider's web of that size would be very sticky, for sure.

But the thing is, when we went out looking for it, the spider was gone.  Spider, web, everything... GONE.  MOUSES!

Now there are three possibilities.  The first is that, that ol' mother ship the peep appeared to be signalling with her stupid little flashlight, did actually land and not findin' the peep, took the spider and its web away.  The second is that a big bird swooped down and ate it.  Crows are big.  There are crows about.  But I always thought crows had better taste than that.  And finally...

Well finally, option three is the option I don't wanna really think about.  Could the spider have packed up its web and be hiding somewhere else, lurking about?  Waiting for the peep or one of us cats to wander across its path and....

MOUSES!

I don't even wanna think about that.  I'd much rather have aliens landin' in the backyard, for sure.

So Friday afternoon, the peep went on a bit of a shopping spree.  She now has the biggest, baddest flashlight I have ever, ever seen.  That thing could illuminate the dark side of the moon, which would come in handy if you're lookin' for alien mother ships, hangin' around over there, for sure. MOUSES!

And I, Seville the Cat, have made note of the fact that from now on, if out after dark, I must be careful to not only watch out for nothin'-but-nightie-wearin' peeps with new and improved dark-side-of-the-moon-illuminating flashlights BUT ALSO, spiders.  Not to mention aliens although truth be told, I'm always on the lookout for them. MOUSES!

the planet of Doom

"Whatcha got there, Peepers?"  I sniffed at the peep's glass.  "Wine? Nah, I'll just stick to this here nip mouse, I think.  Can't beat a good nip mouse, you know.  This one is vintage 2013, I believe."  I breathed in, deeply. "Ahhh...  2013 was a great year for the nip."

"Oohhh...  but what's that?  Cheese? Don't mind if I do!" and I swiped a piece of cheese from the peep's plate.  It was Havarti.  Delicious.  "Pass me another piece of cheese, please.  That one.  No, not the teeny tiny one.  The bigger one over there.  Yes, that's the one."

After snackin' on the cheese, I settled in next to Peep #1, usin' my nip mouse for a pillow.  It really was a great mouse, only recently having been discovered hiding underneath the chesterfield in the living room.  Obviously, none of the other cats in the house had encountered this particular nip mouse before as no one had yet slobbered over it.  Any slobbering on this mouse would be done by none other than myself, Nerissa the Cat.  EXCELLENT.

I was in serious need of a little evening nap as my afternoon one had been rudely interrupted by the peep and her vacuuming.  Why-oh-why peeps insist upon vacuuming is beyond my comprehension. They're not even very good at it.  They vacuum once only to turn around and have to do it all over again a few days later.  You'd think they could get it right the first time.  They certainly get in enough practise.  MOUSES!

An hour or so later, I awoke from my nap to find the peeps had disappeared.  They were nowhere in sight.  Instead, standing before me, was a mouse.  A little mouse, carrying a clipboard.  He was watching me, intently.  Staring, in fact.  To be honest, it was a little unnerving.  MOUSES!

"Is that you, M24?" I asked.

"No, Sir," replied the mouse.  "That would be my brother.  I'm M99.  Common mistake."

I had to admit, they did all look alike.

"If you'd please follow me," M99 continued, "the Royal Canadian Mouseland Police request your assistance.

I padded after the little mouse, wondering just what The Big Cheese had done this time.  Clearly, if the Royal Canadian Mouseland Police were involved, The Big Cheese must be, as well.  That rat - I mean, mouse - was always stirrin' up trouble.  Stirrin' up trouble like one might stir up a big ol' pot of cheese fondue.  Hmmm...  I could really go for a little cheese fondue right about now, I thought to myself and wondered if The Big Cheese might have some on paw.

The mouse known as M99  led me into the great red chamber just as a mouse had led me there, once before. But this time, the rows upon rows of seats were empty.  "Where are all the mice?" I wondered aloud.

"Summer holidays," M99 replied.  "Everyone is gone for the summer except a few of us who stayed behind to help the police clean up this mess.

"I knew it!" I cried.  "The Big Cheese...  It's his mess right?  The Royal Canadian Mouseland Police are cleaning up the mess left behind by The Big Cheese and his cohorts, aren't they?"

"Not The Big Cheese, no.  It was aliens."

"ALIENS?" I cried in disbelief.  "MOUSES!"

"No, not mice...  ALIENS.  We believe they're from the Planet of Doom."  M99 pointed toward a group of Royal Canadian Mouseland Police officers gathered around a large, monolithic structure, rising out of the red carpet and standing at least twenty mice high.  "We've immobilised the alien ship but before we could do so, it beamed up valuable information that we need to retrieve.  All of the police records pertaining to the Great Canadian Cheese Conspiracy have been sucked up into that thing along with much of the evidence against The Big Cheese."

I peered into the clear canister, masquerading as the hold of a ship.  Sure enough, it was filled with a myriad of files stamped with the Royal Canadian Mouseland Police insignia.  There were also an awful lot of crumbs of cheese.

"Ummm..." I began, not really knowing how to break it to the mice.  "Guys, uh...  This isn't a spaceship from the Planet of Doom," I explained.  "This is Peep #1's vacuum.  I call it the 'cuum."

"The 'Cuum from the Planet of Doom?" the mice gasped in unison.

"No, I think she ordered it from the shopping channel or somethin'.  Anywho...   I guess what you need is for me to crack this thing open and retrieve your files, huh?"  I stood up on my hind paws so that I could better examine the mechanism used to unleash the canister.  "You said the 'cuum has been immobilised?"

One of the Royal Canadian Mouseland Police officers held up the cord to the 'cuum in reply.  It had been chewed right through.  Peep #1 was not gonna be happy when she found out about that.

I pressed the little red button and gave the canister a good hard shove.  It fell to the floor, spilling its contents all over the red carpet of the great hall.  Royal Canadian Mouseland Police officers scrambled about, collecting their files and the cheese crumb evidence.

"Well!" I exclaimed to little M99, "That was easy.  Anything else you need help with?" I asked.  "Any cheese fondue that might need to be eaten or somethin'?"

M99 watched the police officers as they finished up their task of clearin' up the mess left behind by the 'cuum from the supposed planet of Doom.  "Are there more of these 'cuums in existence?" he asked.  "Do we need to prepare for another invasion?"

"I don't think you need worry 'bout an alien invasion," I answered.  "You might have some explainin' to do when the peep finds out 'bout how someone chewed through the 'cuum's electrical cord, though."

As if on cue, I thought I heard Peep #1 cry aloud, "MOUSES!"

The mice disappeared before my very eyes but off in the distance I heard, whispered in unison, "Mice.  The plural of mouse, is mice."

MOUSES!
