indifferent by nature

Well...

Well I must admit, you do have a valid point there, Peepers.  But you know, you're forgettin' one little thing.  You're forgettin', I'm a cat.  Cats are indifferent by nature.

MOUSES!

What?  What's that, Peepers?  What's that you're goin' on about, now?

Do I really need to explain the meanin' of indifference to you?

MOUSES!

Now....

Now what was it I bein' indifferent to?

Hmmm....

Now that's interesting.  I appear to be indifferent to my own indifference.

Or maybe it's just a memory thing.

Nah, that can't be it.  I have an excellent memory, for sure.  I, Seville the Cat, can remember every transgression my fur-sibs have ever committed.  I can remember every transgression of the peeps', too.  Along with every annoyin' little habit.

Why, I can remember...

Hmmm...

What was I talkin' about, again?

It's probably just an attention span thing.

Oohhh...  LOOK!  A fly.

MOUSES!

Peepers, there's a fly buzzing around in my office.  You think you could do something 'bout that?

Now where was I?

Oh yeah.

The thing is, what is important to peeps is not necessarily equally important to cats.  In fact, it might not be important to cats at all.  Not even in the least.  Quite frankly, most things aren't.

It's not that we don't care.

Well actually, it is.  Yeah, it is that we don't care.  We don't care 'bout half the stuff you peeps care about.  We cats only care 'bout things pertaining to cats.

Pretty much.

Most of the time.

You know how it is.

We cats care 'bout our dinners bein' served when they're supposed to be served.  We cats care about our toys bein' kept safe.  We cats care 'bout nip, of course.  That goes without sayin'.  And we care 'bout other things, too.  As long as those things pertain to cats.

What we DON'T care about are the run-of-the-mill, mundane, stupid little things peeps are always goin' on about.  You know, like the uh...  Like the run-of-the-mill, mundane, stupid little things peeps like to discuss.

So what I'm sayin' it this:

Basically, when we're not payin' attention to you, Peepers, it's not that we're not listenin' ON PURPOSE, or anythin' like that.  I mean, we don't decide to not listen.  It's more like we simply can't be bothered to.  To listen, I mean.  Why would we even consider deigning to listen to you go on about things that are important only to peeps?  Why?

And when we don't do as you ask, Peepers, it's not like we forgot ON PURPOSE, what it was you asked us to do.  I mean, we don't go out of our way to forget.  It's more like we simply can't be bothered to remember.  Why would we even try to remember all those things, about which remembering, is only important to peeps?  Why?

And if it appears that our minds are wandering when you're babbling on about whatever you peeps like to babble about, it's not like we're ignoring your babbling ON PURPOSE.  No, it's more a case of our minds havin' better places to be.  Better places than standing there, listening to you babble.  Better places like, uh...

Well...

Ummm....

Oohhh...  LOOK!  A fly.

MOUSES!

  3. We're not indifferent - we just find other things interesting, and when it doesn't involve the humans, they choose to be insulting about it! At least, that is what it says in Sparkle's notes, which are getting increasingly dogeared.

    1. Sparkle was right 'bout that, for sure. Our indifference to the peeps is a result of our ability to prioritize the important things in life. purrs

  4. Peeps expect a cat to focus on everything they way. Really we prefer a decent nap in a sun puddle Seville, really we do.

  9. You're so right, Sivvers. Why is it so hard for peeps to understand that we have more important things to do than to listen to them? MOL!

  10. Humans just don't get it. All that babbling is exhausting, considering we don't care at all. But the dinner thing, THAT'S important. Sometimes my human will be on her computer far longer than necessary. We eat at 5:00 p.m., woman. 5:02 p.m. is outrageous, so of course we have to wail in loud protest that her blatant disregard and INDIFFERENCE to our needs is unacceptable! 11. If hoomoms would only live in our fur for one day, they would better understand how our attention works. Things that move are way more interesting than whatever is coming out of hoomon's moufs. That's a fact, cat! Just saying...

  13. Yep, I know what you mean. Mom & Dad babble a lot about a lot of babble de gook and whatever. Sometimes Mom babbles just to babble & to see if I'm listening to her babble, which mostly I'm not. Tee hee hee! BTW, I think that fly & his friends were at my house yesterday! I tried to take them out but Mom's babble was kind of loud so I couldn't concentrate well. Paw high fives, good pal!

  15. It's true. It's one huge difference between cats and dogs I think. When I talk to cats they have that "sure whatever blah blah blah" look on their face. My pup? I can tell he's trying so hard to understand what is being conveyed. Listening for key words, tone ... so he knows what to "do".

    1. We cats learned long ago not to pay too much attention to the babblin' of peeps, as their babblin' NEVER MAKES SENSE, and tryin' to make sense of it does nothin' but hurt our heads. purrs

  16. Seville, I think my cats would agree with you on all of that. Their minds have better places to be for sure. But it would still be nice every once in a while if the cats DID in fact CHOOSE to listen. Are you still with me, Seville? Hello?

  22. I think we could learn a lot from our cats. They're always in the moment. I think they practice mindfulness, and aren't worried about whatever it is we humans babble on about.
