the big freeze

Friggity-frack-de-quack-der-knack.

Times two.

MOUSES!

So you all know 'bout my plan to stay indoors and enjoy a few hot nip toddies on Friday and Saturday, right?  On account of those frigid temperatures the weatherpeeps were sayin' we were gettin'?  -26C or lower Friday night?  -18C as a high on Saturday with a wind chill of -42C?  Remember how I blogged 'bout that?

Well best laid plans...

Okay, so I DID stay indoors.  Wasn't allowed out, at all.  That part of my plan worked out.

Weatherpeeps' plan worked out, too, on account of the temperatures bein' that low, not to mention THAT COLD.

But as for my plan to enjoy hot nip toddies...

Well that part of my plan was a big ol' fail, for sure.

MOUSES!

There were no hot nip toddies for me.  No hot toddies for the peeps, either.  For that matter, there was no hot ANYTHIN' for anyone 'round here.

MOUSES!

So here's what happened to Saffy, me, and the peeps:

Peepers decided to sleep in Saturday mornin' on account of her not goin' anywhere on account of the weather forecast.  Up she got 'round 8am.  First thing she did was go into the kitchen, turn up the heat, then turn on the lights.  But the thing is...

The thing is...

The thing is, the lights didn't come on.  For that matter, neither did the heat.

WE HAD NO POWER.

MOUSES!

COLDEST DAY 'ROUND HERE FOR YEARS AND WE HAD NO POWER!  No lights, no heat, no water, no nothin'.

I, Seville the Cat, was not amused.

Neither were the peeps.

MOUSES!

Peepers thinks the power went off about 7:30.  Just about half an hour earlier.  She said, "As long as it comes back on soon, we'll all be okay."

But the winds were terrible and the power peeps can't climb power poles in high winds.

They're not as agile as we cats, you see.  Plus, they don't have claws to hang on.

So until the winds died down, we were stuck in the cold.  But 'bout 5pm yesterday afternoon, the winds must have died down enough for 'em to go up those poles with their clawless paws...  I mean, hands, 'cause the power came back on.

For less than five minutes.

MOUSES!

Then we played the waitin' game again which, unfortunately, does not have anythin' to do with nip mice or wand toys of anythin' fun like that.  In case you didn't know, the waitin' game is not a fun game, at all.  Thankfully, 'round about midnight, the power came back on once more.

This time, for at least five minutes, but less than ten.

MOUSES!

By now, the temperature in the house had dropped to near freezin'.  In fact, the sunroom did freeze.  Peepers' baby eustoma plants for this summer all got frosted and the soil in their pots was frozen solid.

BUT DON'T WORRY.  MY CATNIP PLANTS ARE ALL SAFE.

Never gonna hear the end 'bout those eustomas, though.

MOUSES!

At two or two-thirty this mornin', the power came back on, this time for good.

AND WE ALL SIGHED BIG SIGHS OF RELIEF.

The peeps, Saffy, and I all survived the big freeze.

Catnip plants did, too.

MOUSES!

And remember:

IF IN DOUBT,

DON'T. GO. OUT.

Continue to practice SOCIAL DISTANCIN' measures

AND KEEP WASHIN' YOUR PAWS.

MOUSES!

Remember to mask up, too.

  2. That is awful. You need a generator. I was worried about that happening too, but we were lucky this time.

  3. WOW! That was a really rugged day!
We live in Lake Echo and did not get big wind.
However our pipes froze(mum did not have the water running enough I guess) We did have power though and water came back on about lunch. Lots of people in Halifax and elsewhere were not so lucky.
Stay cozy, the rest of the week should be better.

  4. Yikes, talk about very bad timing. Hope you managed to keep your toesies warm. At least here we do have a generator to help out with times like that, and it even knows how to turn itself on if the power goes out.
Glad you are all back in the warm,, though.

  5. MOUSES! That is so scary, Sivvers! We are glad you, Saffy, and the Peeps made it through the giant freeze. And your nip plants, too, of course! (Sorry about your Peep's baby eustoma plants, though.)

  6. We are awaiting Our "Big Freeze", in the form of Winter Storm Barbara, which blew in this morning, after wreaking havoc in Greece. It might not approach the sub-zero tempurratures you have been getting, but for Us, even 4 or 5°C is TOO COLD. Plus, there is a danger of flooding. It's expected to reach its peak tomorrow evening. It's already furry, furry windy and cold so Mummy decided to stay put and not take Caspurr to the v-e-t for his annual shots today (YAY!!!). So at least something good came out of it. Also, Mummy thinks she might prepurr hot coffee or choco in thermoses just in case there are power cuts. In any case, we have a gas top stove so We expect we'll manage somehow.
Take care of yourself and of your Peeps. Purrs.

  7. Gosh, that sounds awful. You need a back up generator, or back up solar battery to get you through such nasty situations! But at least the nip was ok!
I do hope the first tjhing peep made when the power came on was nip tea, followed by hot water bottles. Brrrrr

  8. Oh noes, Seville!
Your humans were very upset without power; we know it, 'cause it's happened to us.
Pipes, food in fridge, no ability to ignore each other with TV's or computers; all of these things make humans crazy.
Glad to read that at least you came out of it without any harm.

  9. Wow Severs. That was a long time to be without heat. Hope you all got under the blankets. Glad to hear the nip survive but it's a shame the eustoma did not.
