a favourite toy

Hey Peepers!

Hey Peepers!

HEY!  PEEPERS!  PEEPERS!!!  I said, PEEPERS!!!

Yeah, I'm talkin' to you.

MOUSES!

So Peepers, you happen to know where that ol' nip mouse of mine is?  You know the one.  My absolute FAVOURITE nip mouse of all time?  Best nip mouse I've ever had?  Very, very, VERY BEST nip mouse, ever, for sure?

Yeah, the one with the torn seam where the nip keeps fallin' out.  It's green.  I think.  Well it was.  Probably.  It's kinda discoloured on account of my havin' slobbered all over it so many times, sometimes slobberin' right after eating and stuff.

Well you don't have to screw your face up like that, but yeah...

Yeah, that's definitely the one.

The one where the very thought of it makes your face go all weird like that, I mean.

MOUSES!

I KNOW THE NIP MOUSE LOOKS YUCKY BUT IT'S MY NIP MOUSE.  My favourite nip mouse of all time.  The kinda nip mouse a kitty like me just can't live without.

MOUSES!

So anyway...

So anyway, you happen to know where it might be?  I've pretty much looked everywhere.  Under the beds, under the chesterfield, and even between the chesterfield cushions.  Can't find it anywhere, at all.

And I did ask Saffy if he happened to know where it is but he's not talkin'.  Not sure if he's ignorin' my questions on account of his feelin' guilty for havin' done somethin' to my nip mouse, or...

Or if he's just sleepin' super soundly.

MOUSES!

But like I was sayin', Peepers...  YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW WHERE MY NIP MOUSE MIGHT BE?

Again with the screwed up face.

MOUSES!

It is not all fouled up and stinky and gross.

It's loved.

And cherished!

And MINE.

MOUSES!

And to tell you the truth, Peepers, if I can't find that nip mouse....

If I can't find my very, very, VERY FAVOURITE nip mouse of all time....

Well I just don't know WHAT I'll do.

It's where?

IT'S WHERE?

It's...

WHAT???

YOU THREW IT IN THE TRASH?

Like it was some kinda garbage or somethin' like that?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Peepers, without my favourite nip mouse...

WHAT WILL I DO?

I know what I'll do.  I know what I'll do, for sure.  I'm gonna go fish that ol' nip mouse right outta the trash and give it a good slobbery wash up and...

Scratch that.  Turns out the nip mouse is in the trash next to an old pair of Peepers' gardening shoes.

DISGUSTING, for sure.

No way, now how, am I gonna cuddle up with a nip mouse that has spent time with those shoes.

Good thing I have a whole whack of other nip mice to cuddle.  One of 'em will have to be named my very, very, VERY FAVOURITE nip mouse of all time.

Call me fickle, why don't ya.

MOUSES!

And remember:

IF IN DOUBT,

DON'T. GO. OUT.

AND KEEP WASHIN' YOUR PAWS.

MOUSES!

Remember to mask up, too.

woe is me

*sighs*

*sighs*

*SIGHS*

Oh hello there, my friends.  What's wrong, you ask?  Nothin'.

*sighs*

Okay, so maybe there is a little somethin' upsetting me today.  It's so observant of you to notice, and very kind of you to ask.

*sighs*

So it's like this, my friends.  It's like this:  I have a Dilemma.  A dilemma with a capital D.  A Dilemma of potentially catastrophic proportions, you see.

But...  But I don't wanna bother you with my problems.  I'm sure you have your own troubles to worry about.  I don't want to add my troubles to yours.

*SIGHS*

OH WOE IS ME!!!

Okay, if you insist.  If you ABSOLUTELY INSIST I tell you, I will.

*sighs*

So I was lookin' for my favourite nip mouse this mornin'.  You know, the nip mouse I keep hidden from Rushton in order to prevent freaky-long-hair-marmie-slobber contamination, when...

Oh my mouses, I don't know if I can continue.  My paws are shaking even as I think about what happened.

BUT DON'T YOU BE GOIN' ANYWHERE!

Oh, you weren't about to get up and leave the room?  Sorry 'bout that.  This is the part of my story when the peep usually gets up and leaves the room, but then, she IS just a peep.

MOUSES!

Okay, so like I was sayin', I was lookin' for my slobber-free favourite nip mouse this mornin'.  Now when I say I was lookin', I was REALLY LOOKIN'.   I looked practically everywhere!  All my usual hiding spots and everythin'.  I have quite a few, you know.  It's wise to have at least two hiding spots in every room; one really good spot, and then a back-up, in case the good spot is discovered by other cats or peeps.

But I digress.  The point is, I looked in every single one of my hiding spots in every single room for my favourite nip mouse, but do you know what?  My favourite mousie was nowhere to be found!

Of course, I immediately jumped onto the kitchen counter to call 9-1-1, as any concerned kitty would do.

But the peep, bein' a peep, put paid to that.  Apparently, missing nip mice aren't police emergencies, she says.

MOUSES!

Well after the ensuing heated discussion between the peep and I about what does and what does not constitute a police emergency...

And after the peep calmed down...

Yeah, yeah, I probably shouldn't have told her, her mornin' hairdo would qualify as one.  A police emergency, I mean.  And maybe I shouldn't have brought up her recent attempt to LITERALLY STARVE ME TO DEATH by making the ridiculous claim that after breakky - before lunch, mid-morning snacks are not supposed to be three-course meals...

CAN YOU BELIEVE HER NERVE?

MOUSES!

But again, I digress.

So anyway, after bein' prevented from callin' the police, I asked the peep if she had perhaps seen my favourite freaky-long-hair-marmie-slobber-FREE nip mouse, lying about.

Not that it would be lyin' about just anywhere.  It would have been in one of my hidin' spots, of course, but the possibility did exist ol' Peepers might have stumbled upon one of those spots in her travels...

Travels...  Attempts to tidy...  WHATEVER.

MOUSES!

Well just as the peep and I were gettin' into another heated discussion; this one 'bout her lack of tidying skills...

Into...

INTO...

INTO THE ROOM WALKED RUSHY.

WITH MY FAVOURITE - previously slobber free, but now obviously contaminated -  NIP MOUSE IN HIS MOUTH!

THE HORROR!!!

MOUSES!

And in related news:  I, Seville the Cat, am in desperate need of a new nip mouse.

And that is my Dilemma, you see.

chill man, chill

Ya gotta learn to chill, man.  Chill.

You know...

As in...

Chill.

I'm just sittin' here with my paws up, chillin'.

Got a nip mouse by my side, and I'm chillin'.

I'm sittin' here, lookin' out the window, watchin' squirrels race round and round and round, chillin'.

Chill man.  Chill.

You know...

As in...

Chill.

Let me tell you, there's really nothin' better than findin' an almost unslobbered upon nip mouse under a chesterfield.  Nothin' better at all.

Or sure; that's right; I know.  Findin' a completely unslobbered upon, as opposed to an almost unslobbered upon, nip mouse might be better.  Maybe a little.  Maybe a lot!  But let's face it, in a multi-cathold...  In a multi-cat household, completely unslobbered upon nip mice are pretty hard to find.  I haven't found one of those since uh..  Yesterday.

Or was it last week?

No matter. Thing is, frantically searchin' for the rare and elusive completely unslobbered upon nip mouse is unconducive to the art of chillin', anyway.

Besides, I did give this particular almost unslobbered upon nip mouse a good sniff, and I think...  I really do believe, the slobber that's there might very well be my own.  My own slobber, that is.

Let me ask all you...  All you out there.  Let me ask you a question.  And it's a very important question, indeed.  It might even be the most important question I will ever ask anyone, all day long.

Okay.  Here it is.  Snowmen.

Okay, so snowmen isn't a question.  It's more like a topic, I think.  So the topic at paw is snowmen.

You know, men made out of snow.

So anyway...  Snowmen.  Do you, or do you not, think snowmen know how to chill?

I think...  I think maybe they do.

I mean, when was the last time you saw a snowman all hot under the collar?  When was the last time you saw a snowman bothered by the minutiae of life?  When was the last time you saw a snowman wearin' a collar?  When?

Oh yeah, you might have seen one wearin' a tie.  Or a hat.  Maybe some buttons, too.  But a collar?  Ya can't get hot under the collar if you don't have a collar to wear, now can you.  Not a question.  Statement of fact.

Course, a snowman gets too hot, and a snowman might melt.  Seems to me it's very important for snowmen to know how to chill.

You know...

As in...

Chill.

Peeps could learn a lesson or two from snowmen.  They could learn how to ignore the little, unimportant stuff, and concentrate on the stuff that really matters.  Stuff like chillin'.

Oh yeah...

Oh yeah, peeps should learn how to grab a nip mouse by the tail - preferably one with no slobber but their own - sit back, relax, and just...

Chill.

PEEPERS!

Yeah, you.  Peepers, COME ON OVER HERE and sit down next to me.  Put your feet up, Peepers.  See if you can find another nip mouse under the chesterfield there, and come on over here, and...

And uh...  Chill.

'Cause let me tell you somethin', Peepers.  Let me tell you somethin' important.

Let me tell you that...

Are you listenin', Peepers?

Okay Peepers, here it is.  Peepers, you've gotta learn how to chill.

You know...

As in...

Chill.

And let me tell you somethin' else, Peepers.  Somethin' even more important than chillin'.

You know that last batch of nip you got from the nip lady from...  From...  From that-a-way?  The nip lady who lives over there?  There.  Watch the tip of my tail, Peepers.  It's pointin' over there.

Anyway, let me tell you somethin', Peepers.  That nip was PRIMO stuff.  It was primo stuff, for sure.  All buds and leaves.  Not a stem in sight.  That was the best nip...

The best nip...

I'M AWAKE!

That nip, Peepers.  That nip was the...

The...

The Best. Nip. EVER.

That's why I'm...

Why I'm...

Why I'm sittin' here, chillin'.

Oh Peepers, you have gotta grab a nip mouse, and learn how to CHILL.

the peep's drawers

There I was, rifling through Peep #1's underwear, when I heard...

Seville!  What the mouses do you think you're doing?

Mouses!  I was caught red-pawed which, by the way, as a ginger cat is pretty easy to do, 'cause my fur is naturally reddish in colour, but today, they were lookin' a little redder than normal, to be sure.

As if in slow motion, I watched a white cotton somethin'-or-other fly across the room, hittin' the peep in the head.

SEVILLE!

I froze in my tracks.

The peep glared at me.

I raised my shoulders as if to shrug, but then decided against givin' the peep an answer.  I made a dash for the door, zoomin' out into the hallway, and down the stairs.

"Did you find it?" my brother Anderson asked.  "Did you check all the drawers?"

"Yup, every single pair, and your nip cigar wasn't there.  Now may I please have my nip mouse back, Andy?  That's my favourite nip mouse, and it's not very nice of you to hold him hostage like that."

At that very moment, Mason sauntered into the room.  She flicked her tongue across her lips, obviously having recently partaken in a snack of some sort .  "Andy meant for you to check the peep's drawers, Seville.  Her dresser drawers.  Not her underwear."

My jaw dropped.  "You mean...?  You mean I didn't have to go through...?  All those....?  Let me tell you, Andy, that is a sight I can never unsee!  MOUSES!"

Andy burst out laughing and rolled onto his back, his tummy heaving up and down as he tried to catch his breath between guffaws.

"Of all the mousie mousin' moused-up..."  I stomped out of the room only to return, moments later, with a plaintive look on my face as I squeaked, "May I PLEASE have my nip mouse back NOW?"

Anderson climbed to his paws.  I looked into his eyes.  He was mullin' it over.  I could see the wheels turning inside his head.  Literally.  Yup, I could see those wheels turnin', for sure, as my brother tried to decide if he would paw me back my nip mouse or not.

Well almost literally.  I could see somethin' goin' on in there.  My friends, Andy does not make a regular habit of thinkin' so when he does, you can tell that he's doin' it, for sure.

Andy let out a loud sigh before answering, "Very well. I guess it's only fair.  After all, you did try to find my nip cigar, even if you're efforts weren't very successful."

I stared at my brother in disbelief.  Not 'cause he was relenting and willin' to give me back my nip mouse but rather, 'cause he was usin' such big words. MOUSES!

"Your nip mouse is under a cushion on the chesterfield," and Anderson pointed to the middle cushion.

Hoppin' onto the couch, I reached down between said cushion and the back of the chesterfield with a paw. "Hmmm...  Oohhh...  OOHHH!"

"Is there something good down there?" Mason asked as she jumped up next to me.  "Coins, perhaps? Sometimes you can find a quarter or two under those cushions.  Last week Rushton found a dime."

With my left paw I pulled my favourite nip mouse out from behind the cushion and laid it down, very carefully, before me,   Then a smirk began to grow across my face.

"Why are you smirking?" Anderson asked suspiciously.  "What's going on over there?  What did you find?"

I reached back behind the cushion once more, and this time, when I pulled out my paw, held in my grasp was Anderson's nip cigar.

"You found my nip cigar!" Andy cried with delight.  "Seville, you did it!  YOU DID IT!  You found me my cigar!!!"

I watched as Andy jumped up and down with joy.  Such a simple lad, I thought to myself.  Surely he must realize there will have to be some sort of retribution for his having held my favourite nip mouse hostage, and makin' me search through the peep's underwear drawer.  Like I said earlier, there are some sights one can never unsee.

"Guard my nip mouse with your life," I hissed at my sister Mason, before grabbing the nip cigar between my teeth.  I jumped down from the chesterfield, zoomed past Andy, through the kitchen, up the stairs, and down the hall.  Turning the corner, I found Peep #1 rearranging her drawers and with one flying leap, I deposited Anderson's nip cigar amongst them.

"Can't stop to chat," I meowed at the peep.  "GOTTA RUN!"  And I dashed under the bed moments before Andy appeared at the doorway, his fur looking even more ruffled than usual.

Peep #1 flung her arms up in the air and cried, "I give up!  Have at it, you two," and she turned to walk out of the room.

Then Andy jumped into the open drawer, making the entire piece of furniture wobble to and fro, and the drawer itself MOAN under the weight of a cat that is half Coon and enjoys snacks.

Watching from under the bed, I covered my mouth with a paw so that Anderson wouldn't hear me laughing.

Andy then jumped down from the drawer, and the dresser rocked back into place.   And the drawer practically sighed with relief!  With his nip cigar in his mouth, Andy stormed out of the room.  Once I was sure he was out of earshot, I emerged from under the bed and rolled around on the floor, laughing myself silly.

A little while later, Mason appeared.

"Where's my nip mouse?" I cried.  "You were supposed to be guarding it with your life!"

"Yeah, well Peep #1 opened a tin of the fanciest of the feasts and that - CLEARLY - took precedence over your silly little nip mouse."

'MY NIP MOUSE IS NOT SILLY!" I cried in indignation.  "YOU TAKE THAT BACK!  You...  Wait a minute.  WHERE IS IT?"

"I don't know," Mason shrugged.  "Andy said something about putting it in a litter box but I have no idea if he was serious or not.  I think he was probably joking but..."

"PUTTING IT WHERE?" I cried, and without waiting for my sister to answer, I zoomed out of the room, down the hall and down the stairs, in search of my very favourite nip mouse.

MOUSES!

Disclaimer:  The above story did not actually take place.  At least I don't think it did.  One nip cigar did go missing, as did my nip mouse. And both were eventually discovered hiding behind a cushion on the chesterfield. And there was some rifling of things in drawers, messin' stuff up.  But the rest - like the part where Anderson was using big words and outsmartin' me - was merely a dream.  Or a nightmare.  I think.

Do do do do, do do do do, do do do do...

MOUSES!

I'm callin' the police

That's done it.  I've had it.  ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!  Of all the mousin' moused-up nonsense.  I'm callin' the police, for sure. MOUSES!

Hey Peepers!  You wanna find me the number for the local police detachment or should I just call 911?

What's that, Peepers? What am I goin' on about, now?  Why am I wantin' the number for the police?

Well why do you think I want it?  I need the number in order to call 'em.

Never mind, Peepers.  I'll find it myself.  MOUSES!

What the mouses?  Why did you do that?  Why did you just hang the phone up on me?  I hadn't even finished dialin' the number.  MOUSES!

Uh-huh.  Yeah.  Yeah, I was.  And your point is?

MOUSES!

Look Peepers, let me show you this.  Now where's yesterday's paper?  Found it!  Let me find that article.  Hmmm...

See?  See that?  See that, Peepers?  Right there.  LOOK.

Apparently, some lady's cheese pizza didn't have enough cheese on it, so she called 911.  Says so right there.  Yup, some lady in Newfoundland called 911 to report that her cheese pizza didn't have enough cheese.

Actually...  MOUSES!

Now that I'm readin' this article more carefully, I'm noticin' that it doesn't specifically say the pizza in question was a cheese pizza.  Just says pizza.  Not every pizza is supposed to have cheese so that could have been the whole problem right there and...

What's that, Peepers?  You say the real problem was that she was callin' 911 about a pizza and that you're not supposed to call 911 about a lack of cheese on pizzas?

WELL I KNOW THAT!  Mouses, woman, what did you think I thought?  I know you're not supposed to call 911 'bout cheese and pizzas and stuff. You're supposed to call 911 only about important, life-threatening things. Things like emergencies.  So what's your point?

Peepers, do you see a pizza without enough cheese lyin' before me?  Do you?  DO YOU?

No, of course you don't!  What you see lyin' before me is a nip mouse.  MOUSES!

That's right, Peepers.  This here is a nip mouse however, it is a nip mouse that is nipless, for sure.

Oh my mouses, woman.  Of course I'm not callin' 911 on account of your not havin' put enough nip in my nip mouse.  That would be just like that lady from Newfoundland callin' about there not bein' enough cheese on her pizza except, of course, for the fact that we don't actually know there was even supposed to be cheese on that there pizza on account of it possibly not bein' a cheese pizza in the first place.  Now that's TOTALLY different from a nipless nip mouse because let's face it, nip mice are supposed to be stuffed with nip.  Says so right in the name.  Nip mouse.  Nip.  Mouse. Not mouse.  NIP mouse.  MOUSES!

NO I AM NOT NIPPED RIGHT NOW.  MOUSES!

Now what was my point?

Oh yeah.  My point is that my nip mouse no longer has any nip.  It had nip, once.  It had nip, yesterday.  It was once stuffed to the brim with the stuff but today, my nip mouse is nipless.  Not 'cause there wasn't enough nip in it in the first place but rather, because someone stole its nip. MOUSES!

Peepers, even you must know that when a kitty is the victim of a crime, that is exactly a reason to call 911.  And havin' one's nip stolen from one's nip mouse is definitely a crime.

Lookie here, Peepers.  See this mouse?  See this knitted mouse with it's belly torn apart like that?  See this mouse that I'm now callin' just a mouse on account of it no longer bein' a nip mouse on account of it no longer containin' any nip because somebody ripped into it and stole all of its nip?  Now if that's not a crime, I don't know what is.

But why do I need the police?  WHY DO I NEED THE POLICE?  What's wrong with you, woman?  I need the police to follow the trail of the missin' nip that was formerly inside of my nip mouse, that will lead to the culprit who tore into said nip mouse that is now just a mouse, as somebody stole all its nip. MOUSES!

I'm thinkin' the trail will lead 'em to Rushton or Anderson but you never know, it might lead 'em to Mason, too.

What's that, Peepers?  What does my nipless nip mouse have to do with pizzas and cheese? Pizzas that may or may not be cheese pizzas but definitely don't have enough of the cheese?

Well...  Hmmm...  Well...  Well now that I think about it, I have no idea.  MOUSES!
