The AdventurCats Prohibition Error Part 3

Previously on the Dash Kitten Blog...

OK Silver, pass me that screwdriver. You hold the whisk at an angle just, there and I...

*tweak*

Woah!  That is not what I...

"Hmmm...  Hmmm... HMMM...  Uh....  Um... Awww...   Awww... MOUSES!" and Seville stomped a paw.

Silver picked himself up off the ground, brushing soot and dust off his coat with a paw. Scrunching up his nose he asked, "Ewww...  What's that horrible smell?"

"That would be me," Seville answered very matter-of-factly.  "I think I singed a whisker in that there explosion.  Plus, I may have had a little accident.  You know, due to all the excitement and stuff."

Seville beckoned to his pal.  "Silver, come on over here and give me a paw, would ya?  BUT DON'T STEP IN THAT PUDDLE!  Like I said, I had a little accident."

Shaking his head, Silver carefully side-stepped the puddle on the floor, and approached Seville.  "What happened?"

Seville sat back on his haunches.  "I haven't got a clue.  Best I can figure is that uh...  Well... Ummm...  Well uh...  Somethin' blew up."

Silver scratched behind an ear.  "I had kind of figured that bit out on my own there, Sivvers. Any idea why this something blew up?"

"Nope."

"Any idea where we are?"

"Uh-uh."

Silver pawed his way over to an open window, peered outside, and murmured, "Well we're not in Kansas anymore buddy."

"We weren't in Kansas before, Silver, so that shouldn't come as a big surprise.  I think we're probably in Chicago.  You know, during the Prohibition Era.  After all, that is the time and place we were tryin' to get to when...  You know...  Everythin' blew up.  See if you can figure out the date from that calendar over there," and Seville pointed to a Gangster-of-the-Month calendar hanging on the wall.

Moments later, Silver was back at Seville's side.  "I think we're in the 1920's.  Also, I think this might be..."

Both cats froze.  They could hear voices on the other side of the door.  Deep, unfriendly, sinister sounding voices.

"Quick!  Hide!!!" Seville hissed.  The two cats dove beneath and behind a leather couch on the far side of the room.

"Like I was sayin', he's swimming with the fishes right about now. What the...?  Did something die in here?  What's that godawful smell?"

Sensing Seville might answer the gangster who had walked through the door, Silver quickly placed a paw over his pal's mouth.

"AND WHAT DID I STEP IN???"

Seville looked down at his paws somewhat sheepishly.

After what seemed like an eternity, the two 1920's Chicago gangsters left the room.  The cats ventured out from their hiding places.

"Like I was trying to tell you before," Silver hissed, "I think this is the office of a real, live, 1920's Chicago gangster.  This is not a good place for us to stick around.  We need to teleport back to 2016, ASAP."

"Yeah, about that.  We might have a bit of a problem, Silver.  You see when uh...  Well when...  Um...  When everything blew up..."

"Yes," nodded Silver, expectantly.

"Well uh...  Well...  Well I'm pretty sure our whisks blew up, too."

Silver's jaw dropped.  "Are you saying..."

"Yeah, we're up a time stream without a whisk."

"But without any whisks..."

"We can't get home," Seville finished Silver's sentence.

The two cats stared at one another in silence.

"Seville, this is not good.  This is not good.  This is NOT good.  Not good at all.  This is very, very bad.  Do you think it was the whisks?  Do you think those experimental warp whisks were faulty?"

"That very well could have something to do with it," Seville nodded.  His eyes wandered up to the ceiling.  "Another possibility is that I might have accidentally dropped some crushed nip in the rubber compound I was using to coat the whisks.  I'm thinkin' the bits of nip might have interfered with the energy transfer, messin' up the time stream."

Silver slapped a paw to his forehead. "Sivvers! Remember what Savvy always says?  NEVER TELEPORT OR TIME TRAVEL WHILE NIPPED!"

"Now you remind me. OH MY MOUSES!" and Seville sunk to the floor in despair. "What is Savvy gonna say when she finds out we're trapped in 1920's Chicago?  We're in BIG trouble.  I'm NEVER gonna hear the end of this, for sure."

"Maybe she doesn't need to know," Silver suggested hopefully.  "Maybe we can get back to the present without Savvy ever finding out about what has happened here."

"Silver, we have no whisks.  We have NO WAY to get home.  We're stuck here.  Stuck here in 1920's Chicago.  Our ONLY HOPE of ever getting home is to contact Savvy.  We need her to mount a rescue.  But don't worry.  I HAVE A PLAN."

and now, the conclusion

Previously on Nerissa's Life...  The door swung open with a loud creak. From what the cats could see, there was no one on the other side.  At that very moment, a streak of lightening lit up the evening sky and a loud piercing scream could be heard, emanating from within the house.

"OH MY MOUSES!" Seville screeched, leaping straight up into the air and landing on the branch of a nearby tree. "Don't just stand there, Mason.  Take cover!"

Mason stood motionless by the door, seemingly frozen in terror.  Seville knew he couldn't leave his sister alone to fend off whatever horrible beasts might be in the house.  He jumped down next to her.  "Mason," he hissed, "you were right.  We can let Peep #1 pick up my October whisk in the morning.  Come on;  let's go."

Waving Seville off with a paw Mason chanted to herself.  "There are no such things as ghosts. There are no such things as ghosts.  There are no such things as ghosts."

"GHOSTS!  You think there are ghosts in that there house?  I thought it was merely some horribly scary monster with a sore throat.  Ghosts are way worse than monsters, Mason.  COME ON... Let's go," and Seville tugged on Mason's paw.

"Seville," Mason turned to her brother, "did that screech not sound familiar to you?"

Seville thought about it for a minute before snapping his claws.  "Of course!  Sounded just like the peep when she practices her caterwauling.  Awww...  silly me.  Nothing scary about the peep caterwauling."

"Really?" and Mason raised an eyebrow.

"Okay, let me rephrase that.  The peep's caterwauling is very scary but not in a ghostly or monsterly kind of way.  Totally different kind of scary, for sure."

Mason nodded in agreement.  "Come on Seville.  Let's check out this house and pick up your whisk."

The two cats entered the house, gingerly.  With each step, floorboards moaned and creaked.  "You think the peep is here?" Seville whispered.  "Here in this house, caterwauling?"

Another loud scream tore through the air and the cats froze, too scared to even breath.  After a minute or two, Mason extricated Seville's claws from her fur and Seville gasped for air.  "Sounds like the peep is that way," Mason said, pointing down a long hallway.  "But what I don't understand is why Peep #1 is even here in the first place.  It doesn't make sense at all."

"Could she be in some kind of trouble?" asked Seville.  "Could the Whisk-of-the-Month Club people have kidnapped her or something?"

"Actually, I'm beginning to question the legitimacy of this whole Whisk-of-the-Month Club, Seville.  I mean, what kind of outfit operates a business from a place like this?"

The chandelier hanging from the ceiling began to sputter and within moments, the room in which they stood was thrown into complete darkness.  Moments later, lightening flashed outside and lit the evening sky.  Light poured into the house and for a very brief moment, Seville was sure he saw movement ahead.  "Over there!  Could that be the peep?"  But the light from the electrical storm lasted only moments and the house became dark, once more.

Suddenly, two by two, candles hanging on the walls of the looming hallway flickered to life.  "Looks like we're supposed to go that way," Mason whispered.  "I think we're supposed to follow the lights," and she took a step forward.

Seville grabbed his sister by the tail.  "Mason, there's no one lighting those candles."

Mason shrugged.  "I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for that.

"Well I'm sure there isn't."  Feeling a tap on his right shoulder, Seville spun around, ready to chastise Mason for trying to scare him.  "Don't do..." he began, before realizing that moments before, Mason had been standing in front of him.  "Uh Mason..."

But now, Mason was nowhere to be seen.

Seville stood at the end of the hallway.  He gulped, hard, trying to swallow his fears.  "There are no such things as ghosts," he chanted, softly.  "There are no such things as ghosts.  There are no such things as ghosts."

As if on cue, a ghostly apparition appeared before Seville,  It hovered for a few minutes, its glowing, piercing eyes staring right at him.  Staring at him and through him, both at the same time.  And then as suddenly as it had appeared, the apparition vanished.

On Seville's left, a door creaked open and Mason appeared.  Seville grabbed his sister and hugged her tightly.  "What happened to you?  Are you okay?" he asked.

"Get off me, Seville," and Mason pushed away her brother.  "I had to use the litter box.  Give a girl a little privacy, huh?  MOUSES!"

Seville glanced up at the door through which Mason had exited and sure enough, there was a little plaque depicting a girl cat and a litter box.

"Okay..." Seville began, "but Mason, you'll never guess what I just saw.  It was kind of white, transparent and able to float."

"Seville, there are no such things as ghosts," Mason scoffed.

A loud scream pieced the air once more.  Louder now and even more unearthly sounding than before.

"Come on," and Mason tugged at Seville's fur.  "We need to find out what is at the end of this hall."

Seville dug his claws into the floorboards, refusing to budge.  Mason tugged at him, only causing Seville to dig his claws in, further.  Putting all her weight behind her efforts, with one final tug, she pulled Seville free.  Together, they catapulted forward and did so with such momentum that the two cats landed hard against the door at the end of the hallway.  The door flew open, causing Mason and Seville to stumble into the room.

There before them stood a small table with an old-fashioned tape recorder lying on it.  Surrounding the table, several weasels were rolling around on the floor in fits of laughter. "This is too funny!" and "Did you see the looks on the cats' faces?" they squealed with delight.

"WEASELS!" Mason hollered, placing her front paws on her hips.

"The Weasel Syndicate?" Seville cried. "MOUSES!"

The weasels continued to roll around on the floor, laughing uncontrollably.  "This is the best Hallowe'en prank ever," one of them declared.

Seville felt the fur on his tail starting to puff in anger.  "Why you..." he began to growl.

"Oh come now," and one of the weasels climbed to his feet.  "You've got to admit it, Seville.  This was good."

"I'll admit to nothing," declared Seville.  "Nothing at all."

Mason pawed her way over to the table and clicked the play button on the tape recorder.  Sure enough, the sound of Peep #1 caterwauling echoed throughout the room.  "You got the peep on tape," she murmured before asking, "How did you get the candles in the hallway to light themselves so mysteriously?"

"They might look like real candles," one weasel answered, "but actually, they're electric.  I just flicked a switch from in here."

"What about the ghost I saw?" asked Seville.  "How did you manage that?  How did you get him to float around like that?  Some sort of hologram or something?"

"Ghost?" one weasel replied, questioningly.

"Holograms?" asked another.

"Yeah, the ghost that appeared before me in the hallway when Mason was using the litter box," answered Seville.

"SEVILLE!" Mason spat at her brother.  "They don't need to know I was using..."

Mason's admonishment of Seville was cut short by one weasel as he said, "Cat, we didn't have any ghost effects.  We didn't, did we?" he asked the other weasels with a little less assuredness.  The weasels all shook their heads.

"But I..." and Seville turned to point down the hallway where the ghost had appeared before him.

At that very moment, the ghostly apparition appeared once more.  It hovered in the hallway, a foot or so off the ground.  The weasels' eyes grew large with fear as did the cats'.

"A GHOST!" screamed one of the weasels.

"It's real!" yelled another.

"It's approaching!" hollered a third.

"Oh no you don't," and Mason wagged a claw at the weasels.  "You're not tricking us again." Turning to Seville Mason said,  "We're not falling for that, are we Seville."

But all Mason could see of Seville was the tip of his tail as he fled through an open window. Another flash of lightening lit up the evening air and Mason could see the weasels out in front of Seville, running as quickly as their little weaselly paws would carry them.  She looked back at the ghost and saw that it was, in fact, approaching.

"WAIT FOR ME!" Mason yelled, before jumping through the window and tearing after her brother.

Once caught up with Seville and at a safe distance from the house, Mason and her brother stopped and looked back.  Light now poured through all its windows.  From one window, several ghostly apparitions could be seen.  They appeared to be saying something.  The cats turned their ears to listen carefully.  Carried over the cold, misty air, Seville and Mason were sure they heard a ghostly cry of...

a Hallowe'en adventure

On his way into the kitchen for a snack, Seville noticed an envelope lying on the floor by the front door. "Better tell the peep she dropped her mail," he muttered.  "Imagine getting a letter from someone and dropping it like that.  Peeps can be so careless.  MOUSES!"

Seville stopped in his tracks.  "On second thought, maybe I'll take it in to her.  Might get me some of the really good treats if I do that.  The ones that are extra yummy."

But as he picked up the letter with his teeth, Seville noticed it wasn't addressed to Peep #1 after all. Nor was it addressed to Peep #2.  "Oh my mouses!" he cried.  "This letter is for me.  I wonder when the postman started delivering mail to our front door.  We've never had door-to-door delivery before."

Moments later, Seville had the envelope open and was reading its contents.  He then dashed into the family room, jumped up onto Peep #1's lap, and smothered her with thank you nose kisses and head bonks.  Without waiting for her reply, he ran upstairs to find Mason and tell her the good news.

"Mason!" Seville cried.  "You'll never believe what the peep has done.  She signed me up for the Whisk-of-the-Month Club.  Can you believe it?  This is wonderful!  The Whisk-of-the-Month Club is the most elite club in the entire country.  I've wanted to join ever since I found out about it.  Oh my gosh, Mason.  Our peep is the best peep in the whole wide..."

"There's a Whisk-of-the-Month Club?" Mason asked, cutting Seville's enthusiastic babbling short.

"Oh yes.  Oh yes!  And I'm a member.  Isn't it grand?"

"And you've known about this club for a long time?  You say you've always wanted to join?" Mason asked.

"YES!  Ever since I found out about it about five minutes ago.  You know, when I started reading the letter from them.  At that very moment, I wanted to join the Whisk-of-the-Month Club, for sure. By the time I finished reading the rest of the letter, I realized the peep had signed me up.  This is the best!"

Mason rolled her eyes.  "You only found out about it five minutes ago?  Mouses, Seville.  I thought you said it was the most elite club in Canada.  If it's so elite, how come you had never heard of it before?"

"I don't know..." and Seville hesitated.  "I guess it's kind of a secret elite club or something.  But it says right here in the letter that it's elite."  He laid the letter down in front of Mason, carefully smoothing out any creases.  "See?  Elite.  Most elite club in Canada.  That's exactly what it says."

Mason studied the letter.  "Hmmm...  It also says you have to pick up the whisks yourself.  And that your October whisk is waiting to be picked up at 3645 Hemlock Street," Mason pointed out with a paw.  "If this Whisk-of-the-Month Club is so elite, why don't they deliver their whisks right to the door?"

"I don't know," shrugged Seville.  "Must be having delivery problems or something.  But you're right; it does say my October whisk is ready for pick-up today so I'm off to go get it.  Wanna come with?"

"I don't know...  It all sounds kind of suspicious."

"Suit yourself," and Seville turned to leave the room.

Mason thought for a moment.  "Hold on there, Seville.  Maybe I should go with you.  It could be a trap of some sort."

"A trap?" scoffed Seville.  "Why on earth would the Whisk-of-the-Month Club want to trap me.  MOUSES!"

                                             ************************************

Mason studied the map she held in her paws.  "This is it, all right.  3645 Hemlock Street."

Seville whispered, "Gosh, these Whisk-of-the-Month peeps sure do go all out for Hallowe'en, huh? They must have the best decorated house in the whole neighbourhood."

Mason glanced around.  "Only house in the neighbourhood, from the looks of it.  And let's just hope it is decorated for Hallowe'en because if not..."  She shuddered to herself.  "Actually, I don't want to even think about the if not part."

The two cats began walking up the path leading to the front door.  As they approached, a swarm of rats scurried past.  "I wonder what has them spooked," Seville thought aloud.

Mason grabbed her brother by the paw.  "Seville, are you sure you need to pick up this October whisk of yours?  I'm really getting a bad feeling about this place.  It's kind of... spooky, to say the least."

"You worry way too much, Mason.  It's just an old house all done up for Hallowe'en.  Some might even call it..."

"DUCK!"

"Nope, I don't think anyone would ever call it a duck.  I was thinking more along the lines of..."

"No, duck, Seville," and Mason pushed her brother to the ground moments before several bats flying above suddenly dove right at them.  "Whew, that was a close call."

"Awww....  it's just a couple of bats.  What have bats ever done to you?"

"Seriously, Seville.  I think we should turn right around and go straight back home.  Peep #1 can pick up your whisk in the morning.  When there's more light.  And no bats and stuff," she added quietly.

"Come on Mason," Seville encouraged. Stepping behind her, he pushed his sister toward the house.  "This won't take long."

When the two cats finally arrived at the front door, Seville grabbed the large, rusty old door knocker and rapped three times but his knocking was met with silence.  He knocked once more.  This time, the door swung open with a loud creak.  From what the cats could see, there was no one on the other side.

At that very moment, a streak of lightening lit up the evening sky and a loud piercing scream could be heard, emanating from within the house.

To be continued...

the naughty list

Thinking he heard an odd sound, Nissy stopped typing.  Silence.  "Nothin' there," and he shook his head.  "Must be hearin' things or somethin'."  He went back to work on his blog post but moments later, there was another sound.  Twitching his ears back as far as they would go, Niss hit save on the computer.  "I had best go check that out," and he padded toward the basement door. Creeping down the stairs, Nerissa peered around the corner.

"ALL ABOARD!" someone cried.

"SIVVERS!" Nerissa hollered.  "What the mouses is that...  that...  that train doin' in our basement?"

"I had nothing to do with it, Niss.  I...  Um...  I uh..." Seville stammered.

Nerissa stomped over to the opening in the basement wall and gave the train engine a kick with a paw.  "Ouch!  Seville, you've been messin' with whisks again, haven't you?  This here is a time vortex.  A TIME VORTEX!  You've gone and opened a time vortex in the basement wall!  When Peep #1 finds out about this..."

"But it wasn't me!  I'm telling you, Niss, I didn't do it.  At least not this time, anyway."

Nerissa stared hard at his brother before pointing to a whisk lying on the floor.  "Oh yeah?  Then where did that whisk come from, huh?  You gonna deny..."

"But that's not mine!"  Seville held up two whisks, one in each paw.  "See?  I admit that I was tinkering with the teleportation device, trying to increase the whisk eggbeater differential accleration ratio but I only had the two whisks.  That one there is a plant.  Someone is tryin' to frame me.  I swear!"

At that very moment, an elf hopped down from the train.  "Did someone say time vortex?  As in time travel?  Tsk, tsk, tsk...  Well that certainly explains how I made such good time getting here. But it doesn't explain why I ended up here.  Here in this...  basement," the elf sneered.

"Nothin' wrong with our basement," and Nerissa glared at the elf.  "Exactly who are you and how did you end up in my basement?"

"Colton , Sir.  At your service," and the elf stood at attention.  "I'm in charge of acquiring the coal Santa needs to fill the stockings for the children on his Naughty List, each year."  He slumped down onto the floor.  "I don't know what happened.  I negotiated a contract with a new mine and had no problems getting the needed coal but this map to get me home proved useless. Instead of taking me back to the North Pole it led me...  HERE!" and he flung his arms and the map up into the air.

Nerissa snatched the map off the floor and immediately noticed sticky paw prints all over it.  "From whom exactly did you purchase this map, Colton?"

"The Weasel Syndicate, of course," Colton snapped.  "Everyone knows they're the go-to guys when you need something in a hurry."

"That's true, Niss," piped up Seville.  "During the world-wide eggbeater shortage a while back, the only place I could get eggbeaters for our eggbeater-whisk time travelling-teleportation technology was the Weasel Syndicate.  That's where I bought those refurbished egg..."  Seville slapped a paw to his mouth.  "I tried to return the eggbeaters when they all started falling apart but the weasels wouldn't give me a refund.  Apparently, all sales are final."

Nerissa looked at his brother.  "Okay, seems like you're not entirely to blame for this fiasco, Seville. Clearly this is some sort of retribution by the Weasel Syndicate."  He bent down to inspect a rolled up piece of paper on the floor.  Seeing that it was Santa's Naughty List, he added, "We need to do something 'bout this train, though.  If we're not careful, we'll end up on this list."

"You're probably already on it," smiled Colton.  "The list is magic.  Names appear and disappear, automatically.  Creating a situation where Santa's coal train was drawn into your basement and away from the North Pole sounds like reason for the Naughty List to add your names to its ranks."

"BUT I WAS FRAMED!" Seville cried.

"Doesn't matter," grinned Colton.  "Naughty is naughty and the list always knows."

"And I..." began Nerissa.

"Naughty by association," Colton stated.  Unrolling the list he pointed to the bottom.  "I was right. There you are.  Nerissa the Cat and Seville.  Looks like you'll both be getting lumps of coal in your stockings this year."

"Awww...  MOUSES!"  Nerissa sat back on his haunches.  "But what if we were to help you find your way back to the North Pole?  Do you think that would get us off the list?"

Colton thought for a moment.  "It might.  Do you have an accurate map?"

"I have better than that," Nerissa grinned.  "I have a radioactive reindeer dust tracking compass!  Be right back."

Moments later, Nissy returned carrying his compass.  "I use this to track all reindeer activity in Nova Scotian airspace each December but I think I can use it to track our path back to the North Pole."  He peered into the tunnel.  "Yup, just as I thought.  The confined space of the tunnel is magnifying the effect of the dust's radioactivity.  It's like a beacon pointing to the North Pole.  When we encounter diverging tunnels, the compass will tell us which one to take."

"I'll take that," and Colton grabbed at the compass but Nissy drew back his paw.

"No way, Colton.  I'm not lettin' this out of my sight.  Seville and I are coming with you.  I wanna make sure our names disappear from that list."

The two cats and the elf began their long journey to the North Pole. Nerissa and Seville kept themselves entertained by singing Christmas carols while Colton recited the names on the Naughty List.

Seville leaned over and whispered in Nissy's ear, "I think the elf thinks he's one of those actors who can recite the telephone directory and sound interesting."

"A phone book would be far more interestin', I should think," was Nissy's reply.

After what seemed like days but was really about forty-five minutes, the three finally arrived at the North Pole.  "And I suppose you'll be wanting to meet with Santa, yourself?" Colton asked Nissy.

"Of course.  Gotta make sure my brother and I are off that Naughty List and back onto the Nice one."

"Why of course you're on the Nice List, Nerissa.  You came all the way here to the North Pole just to find that out?  Whatever made you think you wouldn't be?" Santa asked.

"Well 'cause of...  Um...  Never mind, Santa.  Not important, really."  Nerissa pressed his lips together, hoping he hadn't given Santa any ideas.

Turning to leave, Nerissa stopped in his tracks.  "Santa?" he asked.

"Yes, Nerissa?"

"Uh, I don't know how to get home.  I don't think Seville and I can get back to Nova Scotia usin' the same way we got here.  You have any eggbeater teleportation devices handy?"

"HO! HO!! HO!!!" Santa laughed.  "We don't use eggbeater teleportation technology up here at the North Pole, little one."  Smiling, he bent down to scratch behind Nissy's ear.  "But I'll tell you what I can do.  I can loan you and your brother a reindeer and sleigh to take you home.  You'll be back with your peeps in the twitch of a whisker."

"That would be great, Santa!" and Nerissa began to purr.  "We'd appreciate that a whole lot.  THANK YOU!"

"Quite all right, my friend.  And Nerissa..."

"Yes, Santa?" Nissy replied.

"Nerissa, you and your brother might want to brush some of that Naughty List coal dust off your fur before you return home.  I can't imagine your Peep #1 will want you tracking that into the house."

"Yes Sir.  Santa...  Sir.... Uh...  Yup, I'll get right on that." and Nissy hurried off to find the waiting reindeer and sleigh, wondering exactly how much of his recent activities Santa knew.

"MOUSES!" Nissy whispered aloud to himself.  "I wonder if Santa knows 'bout my radioactive reindeer dust tracking compass.  I wonder if I'm even allowed to have such a thing.  Hmmm.... Best not to mention it to anyone.  Bad enough that that elf already knows."

And as Nerissa and Seville's borrowed sleigh took flight, Nissy was sure he heard a joyous cry of...

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!
