that was yesterday

"What's up, Tobias?  How come you're not eatin'?"

"I don't like what Peep #1 put on my plate.  It's yucky."

"Really?  Let me see," and I gave Toby's plate a good sniff.  Then I examined the tin the peep had opened for my sister, reading the name on the label.

"But Toby, that's the new flavour of the fanciest of the feasts.  You know, the yummy stuff with the shrimp.  I thought that was your favourite.  I heard you ravin' and ravin' about it, just the other day."

"That was yesterday."

"Yeah, but...  But yesterday, you liked it."

"No, yesterday I LOVED it.  But Seville, that was yesterday.  This is today."

"Yeah, I know.  It was only yesterday!"

"Seville," and Tobias said my name with a sigh.  "Perhaps I'll like it again some other day.  Maybe next Thursday.  Or Friday...  But today, I don't like it all.  Today, I want something different.  Today, I think I'd like to have some of that stuff with the liver."

"But I thought you were off that flavour, Toby.  Just the other day, I heard you tellin' the peep you didn't like that kind any more.  If I remember correctly, your exact words were, I hate that flavour now and never want to see it again.  Remember that, Toby?  Remember sayin' that to the peep?"

"Yes, but that was on Thursday.  Today is Sunday.  A lot can happen in three days.  I've changed my mind.  I think the liver flavour might be my favourite flavour after all and the only way to know for certain is to have some."

"Toby, this is way too confusin' and if I'm havin' trouble keepin' up with your various likes and dislikes, the peep doesn't stand a chance.  After all, she's just a peep.  MOUSES!"

                                                ******************************

You know, just 'cause we cats love somethin' one day, it doesn't mean we're gonna love it on another day.  Might not even like it the next day and with some cats, most certainly not the day after that.

Peeps have gotta learn to learn 'bout our likes and dislikes, for sure.  MOUSES!

Now I, Seville the Cat, am a very good eater.  Yup, I pretty much eat the same stuff every day which is a good thing as what I'm mainly eatin' is my special-special that I get on account of my havin' had the crystals on two occasions, way back when.

Unfortunately, those two long-haired marmie brothers of mine are always lurkin' about, tryin' to get into my special-special, too.  I don't think they'd even want it if they didn't know it was especially for me.  Long-haired marmie brothers are like that, you see.  MOUSES!

Also, I get tuna.  And not just any kind of tuna.  No sirree.  Not the kind of tuna that comes in tins...

Well actually, my tuna does come in tins but not from the pet food aisle.  My tuna comes from the people tuna aisle.  I get the white, flaked stuff, packed in water.  Doctor said that kind of tuna is okay for kitties who get the crystals.

Unfortunately, those two long-haired marmie brothers of mine are always lurkin' about, tryin' to get into my tuna, too.  Whenever they hear a can opener opening a tin of the tuna, they're right there, lookin' for a pawout.  Or should that be handout?  Whatever.  MOUSES!

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had an entire tin of tuna all to myself.  Those long-haired marmie brothers of mine...  MOUSES!

Back back to my sister, Tobias.

My sister, Toby, is a totally different story.  Toby likes one thing one day, and another, the next. Hard to keep up with her likes and dislikes, for sure.  She has a big ol' list of favourite foods and another big ol' list of things she hates, and if you should happen to look at both lists together, you'll see they overlap.  What she likes and what she hates all depend upon the day and her mood, you see.

It's true.  Let me check out Toby's lists.  I'll see if I can find you an example.

Hmmm...  Hmmm...  Yup.  Uh-huh.  Just as I thought.

Now if you look at Toby's list of absolute favourites, you'll notice this one here called Salmon Feast. Okay, now let's look at Toby's list of foods she absolutely hates.  See?  There it is.  Salmon Feast is there, too.  Confusin' as all get out, for sure.  MOUSES!

There's no real way to figure out what Tobias will like, when.  Best you can do is assume that if it was her favourite yesterday, it might be tolerable tomorrow but today, it will disgust and revolt her taste buds, for sure.

I kinda think she might have some sort of system.  A cyclical system of sorts.  She appears to have a different favourite every day but those favourites reoccur, popping up every now and then.  I think that maybe she goes through her entire list of favourites and then heads on back to the beginning.

It's a stupid system, for sure, on account of no one being able to figure it out.  Not even Toby and most certainly not the peep.  MOUSES!

Personally, I think Peep #1 should just let Toby pick out her own food although in order for her to do that, she'd have to be able to read the labels and I'm not sure Toby is into reading and stuff.  You see, she's not a bloggin' kitty like me.

On the other paw, she did write up those lists...

Guess I should just be thankful she's not lookin' for a pawout when there's a tin of tuna bein' opened, unlike those two long-haired marmie brothers of mine.  Yup, I should be thankful for that, for sure.  MOUSES!

  1. Um yeah, I have to admit I am just like Toby. One day I love a flavour, the next day it is like poison.
Once I used to like Solitaire Trout. I ate it for ages and even if I went off it, I would eat it again a week later. Then my mum heard that flavour was going out of production. She went round all the stores to get what she could for me. She managed to get about 6 dozen tins. Of course those tins must have been poison because I would never touch it again. She ended up taking them to the shelter. Hmm, I think I might fancy a can of trout again. I wonder if she can get me some.

    1. Oh yeah. If peeps should happen to stockpile a particular kind, that's reason enough for Toby to go off it, for sure. MOUSES!

  2. For the most part, we are not too fussy about food.
We have our days when we do not finish the food, but we are not fussy.
Must be fun for your peeps come mealtime ;)

    1. Yeah, six cats can mean six different kinds. LUCKILY there's one kind most of us will eat for breakkies, except, of course, Tobias. She beats to a different drummer, for sure. And I, get my special-special but that's 'cause I'm special, you see. purrs

  3. oh oh oh, well Toby , I understand your plight here as there are finicky cats at my house too. I take different kinds and mix them together and feed the crew, that way there is a change every day. Some cats just don't like the same thing every day.

  4. Hey Toby, I thought that was normal, one day yes, next day no. I'm pretty sure that's in the Rules for Cats book somewhere!

  6. It looks like the peeps are going to have to open several flavors and offer a buffet to make everyone happy. Did you know that some people tuna comes in foil bags- I bet you could chew through it- no human needed :)

  7. Seville, always the voice of reason! I got lucky. Kitty, the cat Momma had first LOVED turkey. Kitty ate turkey EVERY DAY for five years. Naturally, my Momma stocked up when it was on sale. Until the day Kitty decided she never wanted turkey again and my Momma had extra cans of turkey. Then I found my Momma and she fed me those cans until she ran out and she decided to bring me inside. My Momma might not have given me a chance without those extra cans of turkey. It was when she brought me the nummy turkey noms that I'd climb in her lap for loves - the reason she fell in love with me because I'd ignore the food as long as she was outside to pet me. I still like turkey SOMETIMES. But turkey has special memories because it brought me and my Momma together. ~Bear Cat

  8. ps ... you commented about our old Mommas and the dinosaurs on our page ... we did a post about that back in Oct 2015 (Conversations with Bear Cat - part 11) -
    On Momma's age (and dinosaurs):
    BC: Momma? Are you old?
MK: Why do I have a feeling this conversation is going to end badly?
    BC: So are you old?
    MK: I'm 37.
    BC: Whoa! That's old! I'm only 9 1/2! Did you meet . . . {whispering} dinosaurs?
    MK: Absolutely!
    BC: Cool!
MK: Yeah! For my 5th birthday we went to a dinosaur farm and I got to pet all kinds of dinosaurs!
BC: WOW! They didn't try to eat you?
MK: No. They were nice. One even licked my face.
BC: You must of been really brave.
    MK: Obviously.
BC: So what happened to the dinosaurs?
MK: Well, see, everyone thought they were SO CUTE so they kept feeding them all the treats the dinosaurs wanted . . . and they became REALLY BIG dinosaurs.
    BC: Wait a minute . . .
MK: And then, when the dinosaurs wanted to cuddle, they took up the ENTIRE bed so there was no place for their humans.
    BC: There's something fishy here . . .
MK: And the dinosaurs were obnoxiously overconfident and insisted that they were always right and that they owned everything . . .
BC: Momma! Now I get it! I'm descended from dinosaurs! I always thought I was part pterodactyl!
MK: . . . until the humans got tired of the tyrannical terrorists and ate them for the next meal. See how dinner starts with "din," just like din-osaur? Dinner is basically one big celebration of the yummy dinosaurs.
    BC: Whoa!
    {Pause}
BC: I HATE YOU! You think you're sooooo funny. But that reminds me . . . can I have some treats?
MK: Sure, I think I have some leftover frozen dinosaur in the freezer.
BC: Ummm . . . no thanks . . . wait a minute . . . is THAT what happened to your last cat?!?!? It went the way of the dinosaurs . . . into your tummy?
    MK: Wouldn't you like to know . . .
BC: I KNEW you were trying to kill me!
    {Pause}
BC: You're just pulling my paw . . . aren't you? Momma? MomMA! MOMMA?!?!

  16. Hehe, I may have a solution for Toby and your peep... I have this system whereby I get a new variety in the morning and also some off the previous nights variety, and in the evening I get that days new variety and some of the next days. Three choices in a day and two at every meal. Works a treat too. In fact I get some of those as well. I worked all that out myself too! purrs ERin

  20. We are wondering who gets the foods that Toby decides she won't eat today? Do the rest of you share it after you've eaten your own dinners? Now that would pawsome. The peep could keep opening cans until she found something Toby liked and the rest of you kitties would get the rest. Score!
