and then it rained

It's hot here in Nova Scotia.  Super-duper hot.  Not super in a good way, mind you.  Super in a like-it's-really-way-too-hot-and-I'm-really-not-happy-about-it kind of way.  Know what I mean?

Actually, many of my friends in the United States have been experiencing far hotter weather but for Canadian kitties like me, who aren't used to this kind of heat, it's pretty darned hot.  Also, once that ol' humidex thingy the weathermen have invented is used, then it gets really uncomfortable.  Especially for those of us wearing fur coats...  like us cats...  like me.

Like I said, it's hot.  But even though it has been humid and everything, there has been very little rain.  It has been really dry.  Way drier than I remember last summer to have been.  Last summer, I hardly ever had to send the peep outside to water my garden.  This summer, the sprinkler has been going full blast.  And that's even with all the mulching and stuff she does.  Of course, the peep would say we live in a sand pit.  I would say, then why can't I do my business outdoors instead of in those stinky ol' litter boxes you insist I use?  But I digress...

Late Saturday afternoon, it was 39C with the humidity factored in.  The peep headed out to set up the ol' sprinkler.  I practically had to push her out the door 'cause she was a little reluctant to go out in all that heat.  But it had to be done 'cause my plants were practically crying, they were so thirsty.  I watched the peep from a window.

The pansies and fuchsias on the veranda were the thirstiest so first she was gonna have to drag the hose over there and give them all a good drink.  She got the nozzle on the hose and turned on the tap and...  and...  and nothing!  Nope, not a drop of water in sight.  But I could hear the pump running - you know, with my excellent hearing and all - and I told her as much.  Well, she couldn't really hear me 'cause I was inside enjoying the cool air from a fan and she was outside in the blazing hot sun but eventually, she got the hint.

So the peep set out to find the problem and it wasn't long before she found it.  The hose was broken!  Yup, broken right in two.  Now, some of you might be thinking we cats had a little something to do with this but this time, you'd be wrong.  It wasn't us.  Don't know who did it, really.  Personally, I usually blame the peep when things go wrong but the peep isn't as likely to point the finger at herself. She says pointing is rude.  Pish posh.

Back to the hose.  Where two of the hoses had once been connected together, they were connected no more.  The metal parts had just come apart.  Age, I guess.  Hope the peep doesn't break in two like that when she gets old.  Actually, she's already pretty old, I think.  Way older than me, anyway, and I'm nine!

So on Sunday afternoon, off to the store the peep went on an emergency hose trip.  She came home with a big long hundred footer.  That should do the trick, she thought.  And it did.  She ran that ol' sprinkler for several hours Sunday evening, giving all the plants a good long drink.

Monday morning...  it rained.  Hehehe...  All that effort in the blazing heat the day before, only for the rain to come after all.

When the rain stopped, I went outside and checked out a few puddles in the wet earth.  Then I came in and insisted that the peep pick me up for a little cuddle.  My paws were all wet, you see, and experience has taught me that most of the peep's clothing makes for good drying material.  The white tank top proved to be no exception to the rule.  The dirt from my paws along with some of my loose fur made a nice pattern on that top, once I was done with my cuddles.  Yes, very nice indeed.  I'll have her looking like a sterling silver tabby one of these days.  Actually, the top came pretty close to it Monday.  But that peep is so unappreciative.  Next day, I saw that very same top hanging out on the laundry line.  Some peeps just don't know what's good for them.  Peeps can be like that, I guess.  Hmmph!!!

  1. Our weather in southeastern Ontario is like yours, only we're in stage 2 of 3 drought and water use is limited right now. Mercifully, we did get a bit of rain on Sunday, which cleared away the 41C humidex, at least for one day. :-)

Cool fall weather will be here before we know it, though!

    1. We're lucky 'bout using water for the garden. We have two wells. The drilled well is for the house and peep only uses the sand point for the garden. That sand point taps into the water table which gets quite high every spring. Too high, in fact. Every two or three years it rises about the floor of our basement and we have an indoor swimming pool. Peep feels no guilt using that water in garden.

    2. We're in the same situation here (SE Wisconsin), very dry and sprinkler use is limited. (Plus it's costly to pay for using so much water!)

  2. That sounds like something that would happen to our Person. Get all the plants watered and it rains. Too funny. Those flowers really are pretty. Have a great day.

  3. Mom says it is supposed to cool off here this weekend. She is hoping to open the windows and give the a/c machine a break (though she is mumbling about it already being broken, so not sure how that is going to work). Try to stay cool....

  4. We haven't got any sympathy for you - we have had no need for a watering can let alone a hose pipe - come to wet Britain for a soggy garden.
Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx

  5. Gosh, 39 is very hot for where you live. We hope you get some good relief soon. It is really good the water supply is not an issue for you. However kinda funny about the rain just after watering. That seems to happen at our house too.

  6. It's not that hot today. It's sposed to rain sometime. But this part of Minnesnowta is full of humdidity! We are sposed to wait for a certain temperature before we turn our air coolie thingy on. It feels weird to say, come on get warmer. Two more degrees. Come on. But then we can be cool. Beans have weird rules. This building has wet in the air. We need to take it away.

  9. Wow, it is hot here today in Los Angeles, but it has been even worse for you in Nova Scotia! Especially factoring in the humidity. Not fun for you.

  10. I didn’t realise you were in Canada!! You must be on the same latitude as us in the UK, then. Though in my part of the country it’s not that hot. In fact we’ve only just started summer! Anyway Nerissa, you seem to have everything under control. LOL at the rain after the hosing! Always the way!!

  11. Weather here has certainly been very hot, but yesterday evening it rained which I found peculiar... perhaps mother earth is having mood swings? It was nice to watch through the window, though, but the thunder and lightning was a bit too scary for me!

  12. "Hope the peep doesn't break in two when she gets old" hahahaha! We got such a kick out of that, Nerissa. Mom Julie thinks she's already broken in a few places :)

Hope you find some respite from the heat, dear. Here in Maine, it's been a bit balmy, not hot and at all, really and we always think of Nova Scotia as being "just around the corner." BTW, the flowers are very pretty.

    Hugs,
    Tom and the gang xx

  13. We agree with Hannah and Lucy. We have had so much rain that our garden squelches. We have had a week of decent weather in March then again in July and that was it.

  14. Not sure how we missed it, but you are in Nova Scotia!!! Dad and Mom have that on the top of 'must visit" places!!! Dad is from the North East of the US...so he really loves it on that side of the continent.

I can imagine the heat is a novelty for you guys, not so for us here in the East side of the SF bay area. About 100+F today...thank COD for aircon!! ANyways, take care Nissy, paw pats, Savannah

  15. Dear Nerrisa,

  16. We're having the same type of weather here....hot, humid...but hardly any rain. But we hear it's supposed to be cooler tomorrow and rain. We can't believe we're actually gonna be grateful for cool weather and rain.

  18. It makes us shudder just to READ about all those hots! Here in SF it is cool and foggy almost ALL summer and then we get warmer weather in September and October, and by warmer I mean like 75 or 80. Sometimes we have a few days in the high 80s or 90s and on those days I scream like a little girl, ha ha ha!

  19. That's far too hot for us. Here in Finland we say 25'C or above is helle - we feel it is hell. Heat like that should be only in the sauna! And we are glad you cooled your paws when it rains, and white things are the best for drying on - how else can we see all the dirt is gone ? Thank you for your help with King Spitty - he does rather put his paw in it! And he needs to know that Finland is not to be messed with there are Finnish descendants all over the world, ready to rise up in our defense. Tapio is indeed a Finnish name, but Äiti doesn't know what it means as she is English!
Keep safe, and hydrated and cool!

  22. We've been getting hot, hot, HOT, then haze, smelly stinky haze, then hot, hot, HOT then RAIN! That doesn't even last 3 minutes. All that rain does is raise the humidity. Ugh.

  23. Oh Nerissa we have the same icky, sticky, yucky no-rainy kind of weather here too. Tough on fur-covered creatures such as we! I also have the problem with my human appreciating my artistic talents in the "decorating your white shirt" department. She CLAIMS to have a sense of humor about most things...I beg to differ! Well, all we can do is TRY right?

  24. Mowzers, we hates the hots, cuz our mommy tells us NO you can't have open windows (hrmpf). We has the humidities too! Ooooh, sounds very insensitive that your human WASHED OUT YOUR ARTWORK from her shirt...!!!

  25. How's your Mum's transformation going, Nerissa? Is she growing furz yet?

  26. Really? You have pansies in the summertime? Here in TN in the US we have them in the winter but they die off in the summer. I am impressed!

    ReplyDelete
  27. We finally got some rain but in the form of severe weather, which the cats HATE!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am not a big fan of wet paws but you sure dried them off in style!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I must say we have had some rain almost every day for over a month and that was after about 7 weeks with NO rain at all. Feast or famine, my dear Nerissa. xox

  30. OK so you're not up early - you're in Canada!

The weather is nuts here too. Rain in the dry season?!?!!? Wishing you dry paws, sweetie.

  31. Well, even iffen the plants got watered before the rain, they STILL needed more. As we unnerstand water, the more there is the deeper it goes and the deeper it goes the longer it lasts. Something like that...

  32. I too find the Human's belongings useful for various personal grooming tasks. But extra points for using a WHITE top! Score!
